If your file is larger than 1920x1080 or 1080x1920, but has a different aspect ratio, you will need to crop it.
Images larger than 1920x1080 or 1080x1920 that are in a 16:9 or 9:16 aspect ratio are okay. You can find the aspect ratio by putting the width and height in this calculator, or by editing the image in the Photos program.

Note: All screenshots taken in Windows 11, other operating systems may vary.

  1. Double click on your image. This should open your image in the Photos program.

If it opens in a different program, right click on your image and select Open with, then Photos.
  2. In the top left corner of the window, click Edit.
  3. Upon opening, the aspect ratio and dimensions will display.

We use 16:9 for our landscape screens, and 9:16 for our portrait screens. Any other ratio will look distorted.
For example, this image is a square, if we were to display this on one of our screens, it would look distorted.

  4. To crop to the proper aspect ratio, click Free at the bottom of the window.
  5. Then select 16:9 (or 9:16 if cropping for a vertical screen).
  6. You can drag the corners, or edges inward or outward to change the selection. You can also drag and move the selection.

When you adjust your selection, you will see the resolution change. Don't worry about this number being exactly 1920x1080 (or 1080x1920), as long as it is larger than those numbers, and is the 16:9 (or 9:16) ratio, it will display properly.
  7. When you are happy with your crop, click Done at the bottom of the window.
  8. Click Save Options in the top right corner of the window.
  9. Then select Save as copy to save the cropped copy of your image.
  10. Rename your file as desired, make sure that the format is .png or .jpg (next to Save as type:) then click Save.
